In a memorable award ceremony held on the 9th of May, 2019 at the Morgan Smart Development Foundation Women and Youth Empowerment Resource Centre Warri, the Foundation held her 9thscholarship award ceremony under its education assistance scheme. 16 indigent but intelligent children selected from secondary schools in Delta State were awarded scholarship, the awardees comprise 7 girls and 9 boys.
In the opening remarks made by Mrs Evelyn .U. Ideh, the MSDF Educational Programs Consultant, she described the selection process of picking the awardees to involve; the written exams and oral interview, followed by home visitations to verify the location and living conditions of the children and their families; the financial status of parents and their attitudes are also appraised, she went on to cite a few of the awardees whose living conditions were very pitiful. All these steps form the criteria of choosing awardees. She also revealed that the Foundation laid special emphasis on girl child education, because the President\CEO’s passion for the emancipation of the girl.
The chairman of the occasion, BldrJubeJemide lauded MSDF for her noble efforts at giving hope and opportunity to the children over the years; she. He also charged Parents present at the occasion, to always source for Scholarship opportunities from government agencies like DESOPADEC and NDDC to know when to ask for assistance and that they should not be too relaxed in their comfort zones
With the granting of awards to 16 new beneficiaries, the Foundation has over the past 9 years successfully supported about 155 students through its Educational Assistance Scheme. President /CEO MSDF, Dr. Omawumi Evelyn Atsiangbe-Urhoboexpressed her joy and sense of accomplishment at this feat, despite the heavy financial commitment and challenges to meet up to the expectations of the awardees, she further reiterated that, she set up the Foundation about 15 years ago to add value to the society by helping to empower poor women to give qualitative education to their children. The scholarship was thus like an additional support to cover for the educational needs of beneficiaries throughout their secondary school, subject to their performance every year, while their parents would be responsible for their feeding and transportation to school.
She went on to inform the guests present of the Inauguration of the MSDF Awardees Alumni Association, aimed to ensure the sustainability of the Scholarship program for the future beneficiaries, and the publication of a newsletter “Step up” by the Foundation’s Scholars. Dr. Urhobo concluded by appreciating everyone including the invited guests, who have supported the Foundation to help actualize the dreams of the beneficiaries.
The Chief Inspector of Education, Warri South LGA, represented by Mrs Otomiewo, thanked the President\CEO of the Foundation for her unwavering commitment to providing access to qualitative education for indigent children,she congratulated the new awardees and pleaded with them to always read their books and take their studies seriously.
High point of the occasion was the presentation of the award letters and the customary scholarship kit (new set of school uniforms, school bags, school shoes, note books, text books) to the newly awarded beneficiaries.
